The Main Rules of Firearms Safety:

#1

Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

#2

ALWAYS keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction until you are ready to shoot. (Previously known as the "laser rule"; Don't let the muzzle direction cross through anyone or anything that should not be shot.)

#3

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. (It is best to keep your trigger finger straight alongside the gun frame above the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.)

#4

ALWAYS keep the firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it.

#5

ALWAYS be sure of your target (or threat) and what is beyond it.

Safety FAILURE...

A police officer mishandled this civilian driver's firearm, and unintentionally shot the driver in his leg. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER until ready to shoot.

Safety FAILURES resulted in the death of a student...

This instructor and former Police Lieutenant FAILED to follow multiple firearm safety rules, and unintentionally shot and killed one of his students. Horrible tragedy.
